A Praise For One of the Biggest Blockbusters of All Time

On the first day of class, each of us were asked what our favorite movie was. My answer was Titanic, and despite difficulty of choosing just one favorite movie, I really do believe this one had the most impact on me. And I believe a lot of this is due to very smart filmmaking strategies that were use all throughout the movie. Now this fact, combined with us watching another blockbuster (Jaws) in class, has encouraged me to write a post about my favorite blockbuster of all time.

Now first off, I'm aware that Titanic has kind of a moderate reputation in the film world, with it being very common to make jokes and memes about the movie. But I also think the film has a ton of something that I find really hard for a movie to pull off well, and that's mass appeal. I think Titanic is such a popular movie because it pushes the audience to care about the people on the ship. The movie uses a relatable story and relatable characters to allow the audience to emphasize easily with the ill-fated guests on the trip.

Now admittedly, I also love the romance in the movie. It may indeed be cheesy at points, but I think any true romantic relationship has its moments of cheesiness. I think Titanic does a wonderful job showing how society can impact romantic relationships, for better and worse. Jack and Rose barely even were able to interact with each other, despite clearly having great chemistry and really falling for each other. And with this influence from society, we can also see how it forces the characters to grow as people, and see things about life in a way they never could have before. I think the contrasting party scene in the movie is an excellent example of this, and is really such a character-development moment for Rose, as she is finally starting to find what makes her happy and have fun in life, all because of Jack.
